Splish splash: a whale, in pencil

Listen for

It started with a blank page and a pencil, and I had no idea what was coming. Every drawing at that table was a surprise. A few minutes later, a whale was breaking the surface.

Right before this one, they sharpened the pencil by hand, and you can hear it: the fresh, sharp point gives every line a finer, more precise sound, and the grain of the paper adds its own texture underneath.

Turned up, every stage of a drawing sounds different, from the first light lines to the heavy shading, and every hand draws with its own touch.

They wrote “Splish splash!” in the corner, which says it better than I can.

These are six moments from almost eight minutes of drawing.

The drawing is theirs, shared here with their permission.

Your sketchbook has a sound too

Bring the sketchbook you already draw in, or whatever’s in your bag. Your paper, your pencil and your hand make a sound nobody else can. About an hour at a Portland café, and your latte, matcha, or pastry is on me.
